Molly has returned from Ireland - not much resolution about what was left unclear at the end of the last book and Daniel is still suspended. Molly takes him on to help with her now overflowing case load. As usual several cases turn out to be related in unsuspected ways. I saw how most were going to combine before Molly, but still enjoyed watching her figure it out. Missed the OConners and what ever happened to her friend from the boat that she was going to keep in touch with
This is another enjoyable historical mystery, the seventh in the Molly Murphy series by the author. It is no less enjoyable than the others that preceded it. Featuring Molly Murphy, a feisty and resourceful Irish immigrant to America who is searching for the American Dream at the turn of the twentieth century, the book is replete with historical detail and well-written. The plot is cogent and the characters are well developed. With each book, the lives of the main characters are expanded upon and further developed.
Molly is trying to make it as a private detective with her own agency and is apparently finally succeeding in a man's world as for once she has more work that she can handle. She engages the assistance of her suitor, Captain Daniel Sullivan of the New York City Police Department, who is currently but wrongfully on suspension. The myriad of cases she is handling makes Daniel gain a new appreciation for Molly professionally, but as always, Molly finds herself in situations that can spell life or death for her.
As with all cozy mysteries, the mystery is secondary to the evolvement of the recurring characters and the ordinary discourse of life that binds them. As always, the dialogue moves the plot along at a brisk pace, and the book is peppered with a host of interesting, quirky characters that entertain the reader. This is a highly addictive series that makes the reader eagerly await the author's next book.
December 1902 finds Molly back from her ill-fated trip to Ireland and trying to juggle multiple cases at once. First, there's the prospective husband she's been hired to tail to make sure he is above board. Then she is hired to protect aging actress Blanch Lovejoy from the ghost haunting the theater where her comeback Broadway play is supposed to debut. Next, she's hired to find out what happened to John Jacob Halsted, a rich Yale student who is accused of robbing friends right before he vanished. Finally, she and beau Daniel Sullivan find a woman unconscious in the snow in Central Park. The woman wasn't dressed for the outdoors, and when she awakes can't speak and doesn't seem to track with anyone.
While Molly is pleased to have so much work to pay her bills, she also can't juggle it all. So she approaches Daniel, a wrongfully suspended police captain, about helping her. But that potential partnership seems to only cause more friction in their relationship. Can the two find a way to work together and successfully solve all these cases?
When done right, this series is as much about the historical as it is about the mystery. Here, it is done well. Occasionally, the plot appears to wander, but every one of those details becomes an important part of the story. There is still plenty of coincidence here, but Molly is also able to make a few deductions herself. The cases are juggled well, and one plot or the other was always moving forward.
What I found most interesting is the relationship between Molly and Daniel. I have never really liked him, but here I couldn't decide whose side I was on. One minute, I was mad at him, but a few pages later I couldn't believe that Molly could be so childish. I'm still not sure where I want their relationship to go, but I am more open to the possibilities then I used to be.
This series uses mystery to entertain and give us a glimpse into life 100 years ago. And you'll enjoy every minute of this time machine.
Best series I've ever read ~ suspense wrapped in a well-researched historical setting! Mysteries and heroine's dilemmas are all solved in different ways, so the endings are not predictable. These novels are real page-turners ~ there is a subsequent novel (14 or 15 to date) to continue the main character's experiences, so you don't feel a letdown as you get to the conclusion of each novel ~ just start reading the next one in the series.
I would recommend reading these novels in order to get a smooth understanding and background of what happened previously to the main character.
"Murphy's Law" is the first novel in this suspenseful series! ENJOY!
