Readers say, “ Quiet The Dead is everything a Southern mystery should be.”
Book one of the not-so-cozy Promise McNeal Mystery series introduces retired psychologist and Atlanta transplant to the Western North Carolina Mountains, Promise McNeal, who doesn’t believe in coincidences. Promise believes the universe always has a plan. And that plan may sometimes include messages from the dearly, or not so dearly, departed. Just how her dream of a hanged woman dangling over a creek fits into that plan, she isn’t sure. But when she accepts a lucrative consulting job from her fair-weather friend, Atlanta attorney Garland Wang, she has a sense she’s about to find out. Garland says the assignment is “a piece of cake”, though, as usual, he’s selective in sharing information, and Promise finds herself digging into something that isn’t at all like cake.
But dig she does. After all, her nest egg has hatched and flown with the four winds since her move to the mountains and Garland pays well. She’s also more than curious about who killed wealthy socialite Stella Tournay, and why she haunts her dreams. But then, as Promise is within a hand’s grasp of unraveling the truth about Stella’s death and the secret to the unexplained Tournay fortune, another murder pushes her into the darkness with only her intuition as armor, and clues from a murdered woman, as weapons.
Mark de Castrique, author of the Sam Blackman Mysteries, writes, “Quiet The Dead will keep you guessing until the final, surprising revelation.”

This is a well written, grab and hold your attention, southern mystery. Dr. Promise McNeal,( who doesn't love this name), is an absolutely wonderful main character. Closing her practice as a counselor, she leaves Atlanta for the Appalachian area of North Carolina. Buying a general store and a home at the foothills of the mountains she's hoping to find pleasure running the store, enjoying the laid back atmosphere of the small mountain town, and providing counseling services only on a part time basis. Her highly tuned intuitive leanings seem heightened in this area so rich in mountain lore and unusual unexplained phenomenons. It really begins with a dream and a phone call from an Atlanta attorney/friend needing her services on a case. Of course, the two are connected, and the mystery is revealed. Great characters, beautiful settings, engaging mystery, ghosts of the past, and a hint of romance, is what you'll enjoy in this mystery. 5 stars for sure.Product details

Quiet The Dead A Promise McNeal Mystery Promise McNeal Mysteries Book 1 edition by Morgan James Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Very well written. A good mystery and characters you can like and can relate to. Written with personal interaction but not a story that ends up being more about sex then mystery. Will definitely read more by James.
I'm a fast reader and I read a lot so I enjoy a good book and a good author, but it takes a lot to leave an impression on me. This author and this book series is the latter.
I like when the author is descriptive enough to take my mind to the location. I like when I learn interesting things within the story. I also like when the characters are smart but flawed, interesting but average. This book has it all, and I am hooked.
Promise, the main character is smart, yet refreshingly human. Although she's in her 50's and I am in my 30's, I feel like I connected with her and I understand a lot of her life trials. The other characters have a great mix of the romantic character, the savvy side-kick (who happens to be lover-man's daughter), the interesting neighbor, and the quirky friend (who happens to be male and a lawyer).
Aside from the characters, the storyline is very interesting, Promise has a PhD in psychology but got burned out and moved to a mountain-side city after buying a "sickly" farm, and a money pit convenience store. If that's not enough, she's also semi-psychic. I enjoyed this book and am going to continue to read the rest of the series.
Although I often shy away from mysteries with a hint of the paranormal, I encountered this novel during the countdown to Halloween, so of course, it seemed the right time to be reading it. I am so glad that I did. Beautifully written and edited, with an engaging and complex plot that spanned decades of underhanded behavior, and a group of delightful, three-dimensional and realistic characters, this is a truly enjoyable book. The writer provides a "distance" between the horrible reality of murder and the reader's sensibilities; there is no blood and gore, but a great deal of empathy for the victims. The hint of the paranormal is just that a hint, just enough to add spice to the narrative. I am the pickiest of readers when it comes to editing, and I found only one or two bits of punctuation with which to argue; if there was any fault, it lay in the fact that the edition had a few episodes where the formatting went wacky. There is a strong moral sense threading its way through the novel, and I liked that. All in all, a very excellent mystery.
Enjoyable cozy mystery series with a sense of location, fully developed characters and a smidge of the paranormal. As the mystery-solver Dr. Promise McNeal is a mature PhD psychologist recently moved from the "big city" life of Atlanta to the Monte rural North Carolina mountains.
I just finished this series and consider the plots varied and interesting with characters who grow from book to book. Promise has a "gift" that some call "the sight" and others consider intuition. Her curiosity leads her into solving murder mysteries.
The series offers a bit of romance but fortunately not too much. Without going overboard the author includes a wonderful older character who word choice and verbal pacing capture local attitudes and dialect without being distracting.
As a main character, Promise is admirable but not perfect. Her love interest and their relationship evolve throughout the series. Mysteries include those from the past and situations involving antiques, artwork, and circus performers.
I recommend reading these in order to best experience plot and character development.
It's hard to explain why some books catch and keep your interest and some just don't. This didn't. The plot was plausible, but just not engagingly written. I know authors work hard, and I wouldn't want to bash anyone, but it's just not very interesting. Should the author read this, the best part is the personal back story. I feel the author would be better writing something more along those lines vice a mystery.
I like this author and I like the characters she has created in this series. Although a bit formulaic, the story has good pace, keeps you reading, and you like the people. So many of the books out there now have such broken, tragic main characters I am exhausted before the end of the story. Not so with the Promise McNeal books. I will continue to look for more of these stories. No bad language, a tiny bit of sexual tension but no torrid sex scenes so I am comfortable recommending the books to a friend.. Good grammar, spelling and punctuation. What a relief. I think you will enjoy this book.
