I liked The Shadows better than most of the recent books - there was more feeling to it, and for the first 2/3 of the book I was enjoying the read. The it started to fall apart in a big way.

I can't get past the stupidity of Doc Jane and Manny just calmly agreeing to euthanase ANYONE, much less someone they have been actively trying to save. Especially since they would still be thinking that there are avenues unexplored etc. That scene was wrong in so many ways, and it's stuck in my head now. Thanks for that.

Leaving aside the killing off of a heroine in a HEA story (which is another review all on its own), the author has forgotten that Doc Jane is a ghost. She's ignored the previously important fact of Payne's healing gift. She's ignored the Angel in residence and his abilities. She's even ignored the Scribe Virgin. Surely if the SV was involved enough to get Trez to Selena in the first place, she would also have something to offer about being frozen? Oh yeah, and did anyone bother to go and read the scribe work the Chosen have spent their lives writing?

And yay, the hero of the book is forever gooseberry to his brother's HEA, which was pretty much skipped over in the book. Awesome to imagine Trez going through his very long life in waiting mode. I can only say JR better not dredge up another mate for him.

I was quite captured by Rhage's issues, and wanted to see some kind of resolution there. It's just hanging though. Too many threads, not enough depth or movement. Sigh.

I'm sooo bored with Layla and Xcor - the relationship has some nice tension in it, but honestly the 'tell or don't tell' part of it is getting old. And there isn't really a good connection for me about why Xcor has changed - if he has. Yawn.

Throe and Assail were just distractions. I tend more and more to just skip over the parts about the Lessers as well. Boring and never goes anywhere. Paradise was a kind of distraction, too. It was clear that this was a setup for the next series, and that's where the story could have gone. There was no need for it here.

I guess I'm left feeling irritated, grumpy, and still waiting for some kind of ending.

The Shadows Black Dagger Brotherhood JR Ward 9780451417084 Books Reviews

I was really into this series in the beginning. I loved the characters and their stories were engaging.
Now, not so much. I don't want to give away spoilers but I also don't want anyone to be pimp-slapped by the ending.

******SPOILERS*****************
T?his is not the HEA you would expect to see in a romance novel. If you like a book that makes you Kleenex poor, go right ahead and have at it. I, on the other hand, read novels like these to escape the reality that we are stuck in. Life can be full of pain and loss. I'd rather not spend my leisure time reading about it. I want action, suspense, romance and in the end for everyone to be Happy Ever After. To dirt nap a main character in my book is so NOT okay. Ms. Ward, you have broken the rules of your world at will. Why spend all that time on building a relationship between two characters to kill one off? REALLY?!? This is the second time you have truly disappointed me. (We won't talk about Jane 😈) The characters I have loved fell flat. It's as if you don't even care about them anymore. Why, just........why??? 😢
Ok book.....got attached to characters.....sad....good lord I hate to cry....not one that I was overly happy with....This book was a total stick it up you ass I am an artist move....she had no respect for the core readers that have been with her for years buying books unseen. On her name alone books were purchased....This a am afraid will be the end of Wards Crazy sales in the preorder world....I myself will NEVER buy another one of her books sight unseen....I may still not buy until I work my way through the reviews....I hate that it had come to this but trust was bruised with Tohr and COMPLETLY LOST with The Shadows.....
Talk about having no clue what your readers want. This is the epitomy of betrayal. That seems a bit dramatic but true. One of the reasons I read these kinds of books is because of the chance to escape to a world where happy endings happen. I can read about 2 people, get to know them, come to care about their story, and be happy that they were able to be together despite overwhelming obstacles. THAT is why I read. If I want to be sad I can put down a book and dial back into the real world. If you like happy endings do not read this book!
