I found that Casey was a bit one-dimensional at times. I did like her ability to adapt herself to the customs of the times in which she found herself. I didn't really like all the lying, in all time periods. The descriptions of the different time periods felt fairly authentic. Casey did seem to keep getting into really bad situations. I actually found myself wondering how she had managed to survive for so long popping back and forth in time alone. Nate's character was interesting enough. He was a little overbearing toward Casey at times, but not too much. The big reveal at the end wasn't really a surprise, but it was a reasonably good way to tie the story together.
My main problem with the story had to do with a minor part of it. At the beginning of the story, Casey's parents have separated as a result of what she downplays as her father's "indiscretion with a co-worker." Throughout the book Casey repeatedly nudges her mother towards reconciliation. This was understandable from her point of view, but became annoying after awhile. References to this situation were spread at long intervals throughout the book.
Other than that, it was a fairly good read. Casey did start getting a little annoying in her attempts to dis-cipher every look and word from her crush as the book wrapped up, but that's not an unbelievable way for a teenager to act. The book's ending was not a cliff-hanger, which I appreciated.
Though I did not agree with or enjoy every part of the book, I had a pretty good time for the most part. It's not exactly a page-turner, but I didn't have any difficulty finishing it. I would be open to reading other books in the series, especially since I expect the parent's marriage will not be an issue in future books.

Yes, this is classified as a YA book, but I would expect it to be enjoyed more by young adolescent readers rather than young adult. I’ve read other books classified as young adult and enjoyed them (think Harry Potter or Hunger Games), so I thought it would give it a try. This one, to me, was rather boring.
The characters were fairly two dimensional, and although the story idea was good, there were so many things that could have made it more interesting that just never happened.
One thing that really bothered me was the use of more than one character speaking within the same paragraph. I found this confusing and annoying.
I really didn’t care for the author’s writing style, although it appears many do enjoy it, so perhaps it’s a matter of taste.
It’s definitely a clean read, if you’re looking for that but I found the romance to be unbelievable. You can have chemistry between characters and still be clean, but I just didn’t see any between Casey and Nate . . . Sorry. It was kind of blah.
It is fairly well edited, except for the aforementioned lack of separation with character dialog and one instance in which characters’ names were switched. No glaring typos or grammatical errors, so a star for that and a star for the story idea, that unfortunately, just didn’t go anywhere for me. I’ll pass on the rest of the series.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. In the beginning I was annoyed at how the main character fixated on her "crush" but what pulled me in was the time travel scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed the authenticity the author was able to achieve in regards to life in the civil war era. If you like historical fiction and light romance, you should give this book a try. The storyline is good, and I like that there is romance but it isn't the whole focus of the book. The author did a great job balancing the storyline with the romance and creating a premise for a story that can have moving parts. Meaning if one character was to be missing from the story, the book could continue forward. I love all the side characters in the story. Samuel, Willie, Lucinda, and Nate. The author did a good job of keeping the story age appropriate and realistic. None of the garbage where two teenagers are practically living together after a week. The superficial infatuation the main character has in the beginning, while annoying, is true to the way many teenage relationships begin. I like that the characters grow a friendship and then a relationship. Kudos to the author for being able to write an interesting teen romance/historical fiction/sci fi without limping by on ridiculous romance scenes.
Casey Donovan has a blessing that she experiences as a curse. She can travel back and forth through time. She travels to the nineteenth century without preamble but doesn’t stray far from her home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After making the trip many times, the time travel isn’t surprising and she acclimates easily. By accident, Casey pulls a fellow student, Nate Mackenzie, to a pre-Civil War America. When the expected return to the present didn’t materialize as Casey expected, these two teenagers had to learn how to live, without the advancements and comforts of the twenty-first century.
Generally, I am a sucker for time-travel romances. This was the major reason for acquiring this book. I overlooked the fact that this was classified as a Young Adult book. As a rule, I generally steer well clear of this genre as they generally try my intelligence. To my chagrin, this book fits the bill completely. I don’t really know if my critique is directed at the author, her cheesy use of words and phrases, the immature storyline, or the slightly condescending tone of the work in general. With not even a hint of hedonistic pleasures to break-up the monotonousness of the dialog, the reader is offered few handholds to keep from drowning in a sea of juvenile drivel.
I was once (long ago) a young adult. Thankfully this genre wasn’t developed. I graduated from children’s stories right into adult reading, without missing a beat. I am a tenacious bibliophile and refuse to be bested by a book. When finishing this book, I felt that I had accomplished something……and run over a bus. (NOTE TO SELF….AVOID ALL BOOKS IN THE YA GENRE IN THE FUTURE….It's NOT WORTH THE HELPLESS FRUSTRATION THEY ENTAIL. *
